Erik ten Hag Admits Man United's Struggles with Squad Depth

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed his desire to enhance the depth of his squad ahead of the upcoming season, as reported by ESPN. United have signed Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee to replace the departing Raphaël Varane and Anthony Martial. Although Ten Hag did not specify the number of new signings he wants before the transfer deadline, he acknowledged that the club needs to catch up regarding squad depth.

At a news conference at UCLA, Ten Hag stated, "We need the squad to be as strong as possible. We already had two very good buys, so when everyone is fit, we have a team that can beat anyone. However, we need to improve our squad depth to avoid vulnerabilities caused by injuries."

Sources have informed ESPN that United are particularly focusing on strengthening their centre-backs, central midfielders, and full-backs. Left-back is a concern, with Tyrell Malacia still not fit after a year on the sidelines, and there are uncertainties about midfielder Casemiro's future.

Ten Hag mentioned, "We are looking in all positions to reinforce and have a plan to ensure we are always prepared. We have already signed two players, and a club like Man United should always look for better opportunities. We still have time until the transfer deadline on August 30."

Highlighting the pressure on players, Ten Hag noted, "The load and pressure on players is immense with the new model in Europe. It's survival of the fittest." This will be Ten Hag's third preseason tour as United manager after minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team decided to retain the Dutchman. After a three-week wait following the FA Cup, Ten Hag learned he would continue, and he emphasized the importance of moving forward.

"We are now in a new season, leaving everything behind, and looking ahead. It's a great project with ups and downs, but we are energized, in good spirits, and ready to work and win," Ten Hag said.

Ten Hag also acknowledged the high expectations at the club in an interview with ESPN FC. "I know you don't get patience in football. You have to deliver, and expectations around United are high. We are building and have twice collected silverware, which shows we are heading in the right direction. Our goal is to instill a winning culture and consistency so we can compete every three days," he said.

In addition, United have appointed Andreas Georgson as a first-team coach, as noted by ESPN. Georgson, previously the head coach at Lillestrom, has experience with Brentford, Arsenal, and Southampton, and will focus on set pieces for United.
