Wolves vs Liverpool

Wolves Seek First Win Against In-Form Liverpool

Wolverhampton Wanderers will face a daunting task on Saturday evening as they look for their first win of the 2024-25 Premier League season against an in-form Liverpool side at Molineux. Gary O'Neil's team has only managed one point from a possible 15, while Arne Slot's Liverpool side head into the match full of confidence after a perfect start to their EFL Cup defence.

Match Preview
Liverpool's silverware ambitions are off to a strong start following a dominant 5-1 EFL Cup win over West Ham United, a repeat of the scoreline from last season's competition. Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo each scored twice in that match, while Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez impressed in their recent 3-0 Premier League victory against Bournemouth.

After also defeating AC Milan 3-1 in their Champions League opener, Liverpool have recorded three consecutive wins across three different competitions. They are currently just one point behind Manchester City in the Premier League standings and have shown their attacking prowess, scoring multiple goals in their last five away games in all competitions.

In contrast, Wolves have endured a tough start to the season. They have conceded 14 goals in five Premier League matches — tied with Everton for the league's worst defensive record. Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa was particularly painful for Wolves, who led for much of the match before conceding three goals in the final 20 minutes.

While Wolves have been consistent in finding the back of the net, scoring in each of their last six matches, their defensive frailties are evident. O'Neil's side has gone 17 Premier League games without a clean sheet, the longest active streak in the league.

Saturday's match also poses a risk for Wolves to make unwanted history as the first Premier League team to lose three consecutive matches after leading at halftime. Furthermore, Wolves have lost their last three encounters against Liverpool, including a 2-0 defeat at Anfield during Jurgen Klopp's final home game of the previous season.

Team News
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is a doubt for Saturday due to a muscular injury, meaning Caoimhin Kelleher could start in goal once again. Harvey Elliott remains sidelined with a foot fracture, while the rest of Liverpool’s squad is fit. Slot is expected to rotate his squad, with Jota possibly leading the line after playing only 59 minutes in midweek.

Wolves suffered a blow in their last match with Yerson Mosquera sustaining a serious knee injury, potentially ruling him out for the rest of the season. Toti could return from a thigh injury to replace Mosquera in defense, although Santiago Bueno is also a candidate to start alongside Craig Dawson.

Left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, reportedly on Liverpool’s radar, is set to feature again but is just one yellow card away from suspension.

Possible Lineups
Wolverhampton Wanderers: Johnstone; Semedo, S. Bueno, Dawson, Ait-Nouri; Bellegarde, Lemina, Andre, Gomes, Cunha; Larsen
Liverpool: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota
